I received this beauteous little wonder as a gift from Japan. The substantial red orb sat like a mystery in my hand as I pondered it. Could the SK-II Air Touch be the famed Holy Grail of foundation? I had long heard of professional makeup artists using complicated machines to air brush celebrities and the occasional Type A bride, but somehow those clever Japanese had figured out how to create a portable version for everyday use.

SK-II Air Touch Foundation

SK-II Air Touch Foundation

The promo copy reads:
Precision Re-Texturization. Achieves a look of flawless beauty. A unique form of foundation, using the wonder of ionization technology to arrange fine particles evenly over the skin. With Pitera and hydrators to help create smoothness and radiance reminiscent of a baby’s skin.

Basically you take the cap off, turn it on, and hold a button down to spray a fine mist over your entire face. It only takes a few seconds to achieve flawless skin. You do have to hold the machine at the correct distance to receive optimal results, but there are instructions for that. The great thing is the foundation will only go on skin. It will not be attracted to hair or clothes. Something to do with charged ions. After, you’ve sprayed, allow the foundation to dry untouched for 2 minutes. Then go about doing the rest of your makeup. SK-II recommends you spray the foundation over your makeup to create a long lasting finish, but I found that dulls the colors of your makeup. The beautiful thing about this foundation is it lasts all day, yet washes off easily. It doesn’t transfer on clothes, so go ahead and put on that white shirt. It doesn’t crease or settle into pores. The finish is neither matte nor quite dewy. Radiant is the best way to describe it. It truly creates an air brush look.

One limitation are the colors. There are only 4 available colors (in Japan they have more – try eBay). I have medium, olive tone skin and I am the second darkest color (BP-4)! I know the Japanese prize fair skin, but this is the U.S., home of the spray tan. Hopefully, SK-II will catch the hint soon and come out with more colors. I also predict they come out w/spray eye shadows and blushes compatible with the machine. You hear that SK-II?

Air Touch is now available in the U.S. (Saks & Bloomingdale’s), lucky you! Let me tell you straight up, this stuff costs a bomb. The machine which comes with 2 cartridges is $165. Thereafter, the refill cartridges cost $90 for 2. Each cartridge is 0.16 oz and lasts approximately 2 months. I know what you’re saying: “OP have you lost your damn mind? Don’t you know the country is in the midst of one of its greatest recessions?” I remain unapologetic. Such is the price of perfection. And think of all the time you’ll save! Plus it will look bad-ass on your vanity. If I had a vanity, this would be prominently displayed on it. Everyone would ask: “What is that?” “Ha! Wouldn’t you like to know?” Then I would gravely inform them it’s a space ship I found at the Lexington Avenue/59th St station (i.e. the exact center of planet Earth). And do you know the device is painted with the same spray technology used on cars? I find it endlessly fascinating that a company would go to such lengths for a cosmetic product. Our bathrooms and faces will never be the same.
